About Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
Wrangell-St. Elias is the largest national park in the US β bigger than Switzerland. It contains more mountains over 14,500 ft than anywhere in North America, including the second-highest peak in the US (Mount St. Elias at 18,008 ft). The park has only two dirt roads and receives fewer visitors than most state parks.

Best Time to Visit
June through September. The McCarthy Road (60 miles of dirt) is usually open May-October. July-August is peak season. The park is open year-round but access is extremely limited in winter.

McCarthy is the main interior town β accessible by 60 miles of dirt road or small plane from Chitina or Anchorage. Kennecott is 5 miles from McCarthy (footbridge or shuttle). This requires serious planning β book lodging in McCarthy far ahead.
