About Haleakalā National Park

Haleakalā (House of the Sun) rises 10,023 feet above Maui. The summit crater is a vast, otherworldly landscape of cinder cones and lava flows. Sunrise from the summit is a profound, bucket-list experience. The park also protects Kīpahulu district with bamboo forests and Seven Sacred Pools.

Top Highlights

  • Summit sunrise — most popular sunrise in the world, requires advance reservation
  • Sliding Sands Trail — descend 4 miles into the 7.5-mile wide crater
  • ʻŌhiʻa trees and silversword plants — found nowhere else on Earth
  • Kīpahulu Seven Sacred Pools — cascading waterfalls and swimming holes
  • Pīpīwai Trail — 4-mile hike through massive bamboo forest
  • Cycling to the coast — downhill bike rides from summit to sea

Best Time to Visit

Year-round. Sunrise reservations required for summit entry (book 60 days ahead on recreation.gov). Best weather May-September. Kīpahulu is wetter and lush year-round.

💡 Insider Tip

Kula (Upcountry Maui) is closest to the summit. For sunrise, you must arrive by 6am and need a reservation. Stay at an Upcountry Maui B&B the night before to avoid the 3am drive from the coast.
