About Kobuk Valley National Park
Kobuk Valley is one of the most remote and least-visited national parks in the US. The park preserves the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes β the largest active sand dunes in the Arctic β and the Kobuk River valley, a major caribou migration corridor. The park is accessible only by small plane and has no visitor facilities.
Top Highlights
- βGreat Kobuk Sand Dunes β 25 square miles of active Arctic sand dunes
- βCaribou migrations β massive Western Arctic herd (largest in the US) passes through
- βKobuk River float β one of few navigable rivers accessible to backcountry visitors
- βLittle Kobuk Sand Dunes β smaller but more accessible dune field
- βNorthern lights β prime viewing location above Arctic Circle
- βArctic summer solstice β 24-hour daylight in June
Best Time to Visit
June through August for hiking and river floating. August-September for caribou migration. July offers midnight sun. Winter requires arctic survival expertise.
π‘ Insider Tip
Access is by bush plane from Kotzebue (45 min) or Fairbanks. Kotzebue (on the Chukchi Sea) is the main staging area. This is extreme backcountry β experienced wilderness travelers only. No trails, no facilities, no rescue guarantees.
