About Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes contains the tallest sand dunes in North America β€” Star Dune rises 750 feet above the valley floor. Sandwiched between the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the San Luis Valley, this unlikely landscape was formed over thousands of years by wind patterns trapping sand against the mountains. Medano Creek flows seasonally at the dune base.

  • βœ“Medano Creek β€” seasonal stream at dune base, perfect for wading (May-June)
  • βœ“Sand sledding/sandboarding β€” rent boards in Mosca for tubing down dunes
  • βœ“Zapata Falls β€” short hike to hidden waterfall near the park

  • βœ“Dark sky stargazing β€” exceptional views of the Milky Way

Best Time to Visit
