About North Cascades National Park

North Cascades is one of the most rugged and least-visited national parks in the lower 48 β€” a wilderness of jagged peaks, more than 300 glaciers, and pristine alpine lakes. Called the American Alps, the Cascades are home to grizzly bears, gray wolves, and wolverines. The park is separated from the rest of Washington by the mountains.

Top Highlights

  • βœ“Diablo Lake β€” turquoise glacially-fed lake with stunning mountain backdrop
  • βœ“North Cascades Highway (SR-20) β€” one of the most scenic drives in the US
  • βœ“Sahale Arm β€” strenuous but spectacular hike to a glaciated ridge
  • βœ“Cascade Pass β€” moderate hike with panoramic views of glaciated peaks
  • βœ“Ross Lake β€” remote lake stretching 24 miles, accessible by boat or trail
  • βœ“Wildlife β€” grizzly bears, gray wolves, wolverines, mountain goats

Best Time to Visit

July through September when the North Cascades Highway is open. The highway closes from October to April due to snow. Summer brings spectacular wildflowers and wildlife viewing.

πŸ’‘ Insider Tip

Marblemount (15 miles from park) is the main gateway town on the west side. Winthrop (45 miles east) is a charming western town on the east side. The park is extremely rugged β€” most areas require backcountry permits and experience.
