About Gates of the Arctic National Park

Gates of the Arctic is the northernmost national park, entirely above the Arctic Circle. The park has no roads, no trails, no visitor facilities, and no entrance stations β€” it is pure wilderness accessible only by bush plane. It is one of the least visited national parks in the US, offering true Arctic adventure.

Top Highlights

  • βœ“True Arctic wilderness β€” no trails, no roads, no facilities
  • βœ“Brooks Range mountains β€” dramatic peaks rising from the tundra
  • βœ“Caribou migrations β€” massive herds pass through in fall (August-September)
  • βœ“Northern lights β€” exceptional aurora viewing September-March above Arctic Circle
  • βœ“Alatna River β€” classic wilderness float trip
  • βœ“Midnight sun β€” continuous daylight June-July above the Arctic Circle

Best Time to Visit

June through August for hiking and floating. July has the midnight sun. August-September for caribou migrations and early aurora. Winter offers aurora but requires extreme preparation.

πŸ’‘ Insider Tip

Access is ONLY by bush plane from Fairbanks or Bettles. This is NOT a casual visitor park β€” require backcountry skills, experience, and serious planning. Bettles has a small lodge and airstrip for access.
