About Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP

The Black Canyon is one of the steepest and most dramatic canyons in the United States. The Gunnison River drops an average of 96 feet per mile through the canyon β€” faster than any other river in North America. The near-vertical walls drop 2,000 feet and are so narrow that some sections receive only 33 minutes of sunlight per day.

Top Highlights

  • βœ“Painted Wall β€” tallest cliff in Colorado at 2,250 ft, with pink pegmatite streaks
  • βœ“Gunnison Point Overlook β€” best view into the abyss, accessible from visitor center
  • βœ“Dragon Point β€” most dramatic near-vertical canyon walls
  • βœ“Rock climbing β€” world-class multi-pitch climbing on 1,800 ft walls
  • βœ“Inner canyon route β€” only for experienced climbers/scramblers (permit required)
  • βœ“Dark sky viewing β€” designated International Dark Sky Park

Best Time to Visit

May through October for South Rim road access. North Rim is unpaved and often requires high-clearance vehicle. Spring and fall offer best conditions and fewer crowds.

πŸ’‘ Insider Tip

Montrose (15 miles from south rim) is the main gateway. The canyon is often overlooked in favor of Grand Canyon β€” far fewer crowds and equally spectacular. Arrive at sunrise or sunset for best light.
